Virtualisation software was a game changer in technology and has been with us in various forms for over 20 years. VMware vSphere came onto the market in 2009 and made virtualisation into a mainstream product and won many awards for its ease of use and functionality. Put simply virtualisation is an operating system that allows multiple other operating systems to run on the same hardware at the same time, maximising the investment and getting the most out of the hardware platform.
Recognising this important shift in the market Microsoft introduced their own product – Hyper-V was released with Windows Server 2008 and crucially Hyper-V has been available without charge since Windows Server 2012.
